Case Study:
Holistic Brain
App Design
Google UX Design Certification Project

Project Overview
Holistic Brain® the inclusive learning experience app serving medium to large organizations. It’s the centralized location for all learning and development opportunities that an organization offers and sponsors. It will combine learning contents from different sources to harness a wealth of internal digital learning assets, external 3rd party content as well as user-generated resources to deliver customizable learning.

Problem
No centralized location or holistic approach for organization’s learning and development offerings. Multiple platforms being used for internal and external learning. Also employees are busy and want options to learn on the go.

My Role
UX designer designing an app for Holistic Brain from conception to delivery.

Goal
Mobile app to centralize the industry’s best learning content and content created by peer’s within the organization. Personalized recommendations for on-demand and social learning based on learners' goals.

Responsibilties
Conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs.
Understanding the User
User Personas
User
Research
Summary
I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m
designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research
was adults at different organizations, in different industries, at different levels and stages in their career.
This user group confirmed initial assumptions about Holistic Brain’s users, but research also revealed that not having a centralized location for learning was not the only factor limiting users from taking advantage of learning and development offered by their company. Other user problems included time constraints, social learning needs, and a more accessible experience.
Pain Points
The Design
Paper Wireframes
-
Each of the sketches clearly shows the basic structure of the page, including elements like navigation, buttons, images, and text.
-
Five different versions of how to structure information on the page were created following industry standards.
-
Stars were placed next to the elements of the design that would most effectively solve the problem.

Digital Wireframes

Will help customize what type of content they will see

Option to skip if they aren’t sure and keep them going through the initial set-up

Going Forward
Takeaways
Impact
The app makes users feel like their company thinks about how to meet their needs with various ways of learning and developing.
Quote from peer feedback
“The app was so inclusive of different ways to learn not just taking courses. I love the opportunity to engage with other employees and learn from others across the organization”
What I learned
While designing the app, I learned that the first ideas for the app are only the beginning of the process. Usability studies and peer feedback influenced each iteration of the app’s designs.

Next Steps
1
Conduct another round of usability studies to validate whether the pain points users experienced have been effectively addressed.
2
Conduct more user research to determine any new areas of need.
3
Expand the interactions in the app to cover every user flow.
